What is Autism?
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is known as a complex developmental disability. Experts believe that Autism presents itself during the first three years of a person's life. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills.
ASD is a disorder with a wide range of symptoms. These symptoms range from individuals with social deficits all the way to those with social and cognitive deficits coupled with behavioral deficits or excesses.
Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 100 births (Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2007).
